Tower Ridge Vs CMD Arete: Which Route Is Right For You?

Ben Nevis is a bucket list challenge for many people: it’s the highest mountain in the UK, with unforgettable scenery and fine scrambling terrain. However, one of the biggest decisions you need to make is which route you will take to the top.

If you’ve already got plenty of experience under your belt and are looking for an adventure, it will probably come down to a choice between the Ben Nevis Tower Ridge and the Càrn Mòr Dearg (CMD) Arête route. Here’s a look at the main differences between them to help you make the right decision.

Tower Ridge: the line between scrambling and climbing

This classic route up the North Face of the mountain is officially classed as a Grade III scramble, which is the highest level of difficulty. In fact, many hikers regard it as an easy rock climbing route rather than a pure scrambling route

Some sections, such as the Eastern Traverse, The Great Tower, and the infamous Tower Gap will require the use of ropes, helmets, harnesses and plenty of technical know-how, as well as a cool head for heights.

Unless you’ve already had plenty of previous experience with similar mountain terrain, it’s recommended that you tackle this route for the first time with a guide or other knowledgeable climbers. It’s a dramatic and exposed ridge that is full of interest and excitement, but you definitely need to be well prepared.

A good level of physical fitness and mental resilience is required, so if you are in shape and looking to step out of your comfort zone, then Tower Ridge could be the challenge for you.

The CMD Arete: moderate scrambling and a long haul

The CMD Arete is a technically easier route than Tower Ridge, with some Grade I/II scrambling sections and occasional exposed points. However, the sweeping horseshoe ridge is a test of stamina, taking about eight to ten hours for the average hiker to complete.

If you do not want any technical climbing challenges but are looking for a demanding and rewarding day in the mountains, then this route will suit you perfectly. The ridge offers outstanding panoramic views of the North Face and beyond, as it links Ben Nevis with Càrn Mòr Dearg (which is the ninth highest Munro—Scottish mountains over 3,000ft).

If you are a fit and confident hill walker and want to enjoy some of the finest views the Highlands have to offer, then the CMD Arete route is ideal for you. It should be noted that in some places, the path is faint and ill defined, so you should have good navigation skills or walk with a group or guide with previous experience of the route.
