The Aonach Eagach ridge looms above Glen Coe, and it has a well-earned reputation for being one of the most iconic but also intimidating ridge scrambles in the Scottish Highlands. With its dramatic drops and knife-edge arêtes, it’s understandable (and sensible) to ask a few questions before tackling it.

As experienced Aonach Eagach ridge guides, here are the top five things we’re asked about this legendary route.

Is the Aonach Eagach ridge dangerous?

The short answer is: it can be. The confusion can lie in the fact that it’s officially classed as a Grade 2 scramble rather than a climbing route. You will need to use your hands and feet to navigate frequent tricky pinnacles and drops, and a good head for heights is required. It’s definitely dangerous in wet, windy, misty or icy weather conditions.

Although it’s not technically necessary to use rock climbing gear such as ropes and harnesses, the route is very narrow and exposed with no easy way to turn back, and at times you’ll have a 900 metre drop on either side. Understandably, even reasonably confident scramblers might sometimes want to use a rope for extra reassurance.

How long does the traverse take?

The full traverse is only about six miles, but due to the complex rocky terrain, allow around eight to nine hours to complete it. The timing will also depend on the conditions and  the experience level and pace of the group. Naturally, you’ll also want breaks to take in the jaw-dropping views and stock up your energy supplies, so factor this into timings.

How much previous experience do you need?

It’s not a route for complete beginners: it’s strongly recommended that you have some previous mountain walking and scrambling experience before tackling it. You’ll need to be reasonably fit and not freaked out by heights. That said, if you choose to make a guided traverse, it’s very achievable as you’ll have expert advice every step of the way.

Our experienced instructors will take care of the navigation, coach clients on scrambling techniques, point out amazing views and generally be a source of encouragement.

When’s the best time of year to do it?

Ideal conditions are usually in May to September as the ridge is more often dry and winds lighter. The daylight hours are longer, and there’s a better chance of having stunning views across Glen Coe and beyond. Always monitor the weather forecasts carefully if you are planning an ascent, and be prepared to alter your plans accordingly.

What should you bring?

High up in the mountains, the weather can change rapidly and may not always follow the general forecast. Therefore you should pack layers of clothing, including a fleece and waterproofs, even in the summer. Gloves and a hat and proper walking boots with good grips are also essential. You’ll also need energy-dense food and plenty of water.

If you book a guided hike, any safety and climbing equipment will be provided.

Security window film is one of those upgrades you don’t think about until you realize how vulnerable plain glass can be. It increases window strength against forced entry attempts and accidents. I appreciate how it remains practically invisible while offering such an important safety function. It's a smart, subtle addition to any space.
