Ben Nevis via the mountain path in winter

It was an amazing day on Ben Nevis today with clear views and crisp snow with little wind and sunshine.

I was surprised at how much snow remained after the warm week we have had, with the snow level pushing up to about 900m, but from there it is consistent and very firm.

Progress up was good on the snow and rocks, if a bit slippery in places. We made a good time to the summit in 3.5 hours where we put crampons on to descend.

The descent on the firm snow from the summit was good until around 1000m where we took crampons off, but from there it was tricky with the thin layer of ice, frost and snow over the rocks to half way down, made for slow progress and a lot of concentration.

At least we had the amazing views, seeing the Paps of Jura, Rum, Eigg and Skye.
